JOURNEY INTO AIVAZOVSKY’S ART

Multimedia Exhibition of Hovhannes Aivazovsky’s Masterpieces

Anima Exhibitions presents a new show.

From January 9 to April 2, at the Artists’ Union of Armenia, the works of the brilliant Armenian marine painter Hovhannes Aivazovsky will come to life through light, sound, and motion. Visitors will not only get acquainted with the artist’s canvases but also discover the stories behind their creation and details of the artist’s life.

Aivazovsky’s immense creative energy is evident from the fact that he produced around 6,000 paintings. He worked rapidly, guided by an extraordinary visual memory, and depicted the sea at different times of day and in every season. He deeply felt and conveyed the grandeur of the ocean’s untamed power — the dazzling sunrise and sunset, the calm midday horizon, the rhythm of waves, and the moonlight shimmering on their surface. His works range from subtly lyrical to deeply dramatic. Some of Aivazovsky’s paintings have been sold at auction for up to $2,125,000.

As with the previous animated exhibitions of Van Gogh and Klimt, this one will also feature exceptional technical solutions —
a 510 m² exhibition hall, 4-meter-high screens, animation of more than 300 paintings, and a 43-minute immersive program.
The large screens and cosmic sound system allow visitors to fully perceive the artist’s visual world — to plunge into the depths of the sea and feel “inside” masterpieces such as The Ninth Wave, Among the Waves, and The Battle of Navarino.

Hovhannes Aivazovsky
(1817–1900)

Hovhannes Aivazovsky was one of those artists who thought in water and light.
He is often called “the poet of the sea,” but in truth, he was something more — he could bring the sea into a room through memory, without losing its salt or its sound.

Aivazovsky was an Armenian painter, born in Feodosia on the shores of the Black Sea.
The maritime impressions of his childhood became the foundation of his entire life.
He did not simply paint water — he painted motion, danger, salvation.
One of his most famous works, The Ninth Wave, tells the story of man’s confrontation with the elements — but also of a faint ray of hope.

Technically, Aivazovsky was exceptional: within a single canvas he could make one feel the power of the wind, the depth of the water, and the weight of silence.
His seas were never the same — sometimes stormy and dark, sometimes unexpectedly calm — yet almost always there was a human figure at the center: small, vulnerable, but standing.

Though he lived within the cultural environment of the Russian Empire, Aivazovsky openly emphasized his Armenian identity and supported Armenian communities and initiatives.

Today he is considered not only one of the masters of marine painting, but also a key figure of Romantic art.
The sea he painted is not just a landscape — it is a mirror in which each of us can see our own tempests and dawns.
